Honoring Women's History Month: Fashion's Tribute to Feminine Legacy

March isn't just about the thawing of winter or the promise of spring blooms; it's a time when we collectively pause to celebrate Women's History Month. Beyond Numbers: Unveiling the Stories Behind 8,000 Handcrafted Pieces

In 2022, #WearYourHeritage is highlighted in Cambio&Co's Impact article, along with metrics along the lines of $203,000 (CAD) invested in local businesses of the Philippines, which converted to the Philippine Peso is a staggering P8,485,427.18! The year was spent supporting 316 Filipino artisans, with 75% being women, through their collaboration with the following brands: Amami, Arete, Rags2Riches, Sesotunawa, Tropikal Beatnik, and Island Girl. This effort has resulted in the hand crafting of 8,000 pieces.  Scroll through the gallery below to see some of the year's most beloved pieces.

Each partner brand works out of different regions of the Philippines:

  • Amami and Rags2Riches work with artisans out of Mainland Luzon; Ilocos Norte, Abra, Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Metro Manila, Bicol, and Mindoro. 

  • Arete and Island Girl has artisans in the area I was born in, the Visayas: Negros Occidental, Bohol (My island!!) and Cebu.

  • Sesotunawa and En Route Handcrafted artisans are in the Mainland Mindanao region; South Catobato, to be more specific.

Gold Filigree | Plateros (metalsmiths) melt, hammer, and twist precious metal threads into lace-like patterns
Across Metro Manila
Scrap Fabric Weaving | The foundation of the R2R signature weave can be traced back to the modest basketweave technique, employing a square wooden frame to repurpose fabric.
Cebu
Shell Crafting | Craftsmen skillfully cut, polish, inlay, and create intricate designs with responsibly sourced seashells such as capiz and macabebe, showcasing their inherent natural beauty.
Ilocos, Abra, & Mindoro
Handloom Weaving | A traditional method dating back centuries for crafting textiles involves the use of a frame or machine that separates threads while intricately weaving a pattern.
South Cotabato
Brass Casting | Temwel, the Tboli brass-casting technique, revolves around a coal-powered hearth and the collective efforts of an entire community. Woodworking | Tau Mokoyo (Tboli woodcarvers ) employ manual carving techniques, use natural botanical extracts for dyeing, and skillfully etch intricate patterns onto their creations.
